Principles and reasons Principles of the trail Result Level of uric acid in the blood Critical & evaluation report The "Sarai Kliew Thong" is a multiple-celled species of submarine plant life that possesses high nutritional values, having high contents of Protein, Vitamins and Salts. The Sarai Kliew Thong, or known by its commercial name as "Spirulina" has for quite some time been developed into nutritious food as well as supplementary food, and has been developed into numerous health food products distributed on the market under various brand names. There are countless claims pertaining to the quality
of Kliew Thong Aquatic Weed for maintaining good health and revival
of health of patients suffering from diabetes, rheumatism etc., but
a Randomized Controlled Trial is yet to be conducted to substantiate
these claims.
The Annalist had conducted an analytical trail by giving "Spirulina" to a total of 41 patients of both genders who were suffering from diabetes, by having segregated the patients into 2 groups by random selection. The first group, consisting of 21 patients, were given 6 grams of "Spirulina" per day, while the second group of 20 patients who were under control were given starch in capsules, which appear to have the same characteristics and each capsule portioned in the same amount, for a period of 8 weeks. Normal medical care continued to be given to both groups, and were given exactly the same advice on how to remedy their ailments. Both groups were given blood tests to determine Blood Sugar, HBA1C Cholesterol, Triglycerides, SGPT and Uric Acid, prior to and after having consumed "Spirulina."
Group Statistics
From the above graph, it could be seen that the level of Blood Sugar in both groups of patient had decreased after having entered the Program, but when compared between the First Group which took "Spirulina" and the Second Group which took Placebo, the level of decrease of Blood Sugar in both groups of patients is almost the same, with very little difference. But if we were to separate the group of patients with high Blood Sugar from140 mg/dl upwards, it was discovered that these patients, after having taken "Spirulina" for a period of 8 weeks, the level of decrease of Blood Sugar exceeds the group of patients who had not taken "Spirulina" bt an average of 31 mg/dl. However, due to the fact that this Randomized Controlled Trial had only dealt with a small sample group of patients, therefore there were certain discrepancies in the resulting statistics [there were 16 and 17 patients in each group respectively. Independent sample t-test, p-value = 0.374], and therefore, the trail should be further expanded by increasing the number of patients in each group in order to acquire clearer statistics.
From the above graph, it could be seen that the level of Uric Acid decreased after entry into the Program for both groups, i.e., the group of patients who were given "Spirulina" and the group that did not take "Spirulina." But it was discovered that even though the level of Uric Acid in the blood of the group that had not taken "Spirulina" had decreased, but the decrease was not statistically significant [p-value = 0.14]. Whereas, it was discovered that the level of Uric Acid in the blood of the group of patients who had taken "Spirulina" had also decreased, and the said decrease was statistically significant [p-value = 0.015]. The most interesting aspect of the trail is that, the amount of Uric Acid in the blood of both groups of patients were still at the normal level, and it was regarded that none of the patients are suffering from Gout. However, the level of Uric Acid in the group of patients who took "Spirulina" had decreased significantly compared to the other group which did not take "Spirulina," instead of increasing as was formerly believed. Therefore, it would be of great interest to continue
the Randomized Controlled Trial on patients suffering from Gout, to
determine whether "Spirulina" would have any affect in remedying
this ailment. There is a trend that "Spirulina", or known in the Thai language as "Sarai Kliew Thong", helps to reduce the level of Blood Sugar in Diabetes patients who have high levels of sugar in their blood [i.e., Diabetes patients in severe conditions, or in conditions that are difficult to control]. In this case, there is no affect in Diabetes patients whose level of Blood Sugar is controllable [less than 140 mg/dl], but further Randomized Controlled Trials shall have to be conducted on larger groups of patients. It has been proven that "Spirulina" does not increase the level of Uric Acid in the blood as formerly believed. On the contrary, "Spirulina" helps to significantly reduce the level of Uric Acid in the blood stream, as clearly substantiated by the trials, but whether "Spirulina" would be effective in remedying the ailments of Gout remains to be seen in further trials.
